“I think Sarah has a real deep need for freedom, and I think that extends to her parenting as well. You know, she’s deeply attached to Kira, loves her beyond all words, but she also loves her freedom and there’s like a duality there that is a constant conflict for her. I also think there’s something interesting about Sarah. The way people see Sarah as a mother, is very interesting to me, because a lot of people will say she’s a bad mom, and there’s a real obsession with her being a “bad mom”. And I just don’t understand how you define that. There’s such a strong need to name her as a bad mother. I don’t think she is that. I think she is conflicted and I think we all have doubt, conflict in our lives. I think there’s a real thing that women have to behave a certain way or be fully so devoted to their children, they have no identity of their own, in order to be like a “good mom”. — Tatiana Maslany
